Tallahassee, FL (WTXL) -- In this edition of "Your Career," WTXL ABC 27's Christine Souders speaks with guest, Haley Cutler-Seeber*, to learn why it is important and beneficial for women to consider a career in politics.

*Haley Cutler-Seeber is the Executive Director for the Oasis Center for Women and Girls

Seeber says it is important for women to consider careers in elected leadership, because the foundation of the United State democracy requires a government that is made up of representatives -- therefore, elected officials should be as diverse a community as the state and/or nation.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, in 2014, these were the statistics of women in office

  • 20% of U.S. Senators
  • 18% of the members of the House of Representatives
  • 10% of state governors
  • 18% of big city mayors
  • 24% of state legislators

Seeber says having more women at the table means that women perspectives, experiences, and approaches would have a deeper influence on policy decisions and outcomes.

The Oasis Center for Women and Girls has a program designed to encourage women to run for office, called "Women Can Run." Anyone with an interest in the political field is encouraged to reach out to them and inquire about the Women Can Run Campaign Resource Manual.
