TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Many people have a connection to their pets and therapy dogs do more than just act as a friend to their owner.
Family therapist Jane Marks offers more on how a therapy dog can open up teens in ways that a therapist, or even group therapy cannot often reach.
1. Research show that these dogs are being used to treat the following conditions: depression, anxiety, adoption related issues, attachment issues, behavior issues, ADHD, substance abuse, school problems, grief and loss.
2. It is particularly useful when other efforts at improving depression and anxiety related issues have failed.
3. Ownership of a service dog develops a sense of responsibility. Having responsibility for something other than ourselves help with honing critical living skills. It encourages the development of anticipatory skills which is important in personal growth and development.
4. Exercise is another hidden benefit.Too many of our teens are rooted to their electronic devices. Animals by their nature need exercise and fresh air. Exercise is demanded in the ownership of animals. And so indeed there are double benefits.
