Staying Safe on Halloween with Technology

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Halloween is here, and if you want your holiday to be full of more treats and less tricks, there are some devices that can help keep your house safe while you're out collecting all that candy.

WeMo lets you connect all of your lights to your smartphone.

"Whenever it starts to get dark and the sun goes down, I can give the illusion of being home without actually being there and control it directly from my smartphone," said Trevor Stuck, General Manager at Verizon Wireless.

And for those neighborhoods with potential pranksters you might need to call... for extra security.

Nest has indoor and outdoor cameras that show you exactly what's going on at your house. They even come with speakers, so you can talk to who's there.

"You can actually reference from the cloud so that if anything does take place, like a burglary or break-in, you'll have that data and you'll have that video recording that you can use for law-enforcement," said Stuck.

Some kids look forward to trick-or-treating all year long, but you want to make sure that they're still staying safe. They are gadgets out there that help you track their progress right on your smartphone, and let you know if they strayed off the path that you've created a head of time.

The LG GizmoPal lets you plan ahead and stay in constant contact with your kids while they're heading from house to house.

"So when they cross the threshold you can actually receive alerts and notifications directly to your smartphone for the child is and what time they got to where they needed to be," explained Stuck.

The kid-friendly smartwatch also lets parents program up to 10 numbers that can be called right from their wrist.

"It's a great device for security and safety all the time. And it's a great way to introduce kids into the smartphone world and get them used to carrying a device like that," said Stuck.

For those older kids and teens who want a little more freedom this Halloween, apps like Mamma Bear means parents can keep their distance, but still know what's going on.

"You can actually set speed alerts so if a child gets into a car, and the speed goes over what you've set, you get notifications letting them know where the child is and how fast they're traveling," said Stuck.
