TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer for women, and for many it goes undiagnosed.

That's why the South Georgia Medical Center is trying to change that, by hosting a free cervical cancer screening.

Dr. Eric Anderson from the South Georgia Medical Oncology Center joined us on Sunrise for a closer look at disease. He says there will be 12,000 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed this year alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when cervical cancer is found early, it is highly treatable and associated with long survival and good quality of life.

The free screenings are Thursday, January 15 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Pearlman Cancer Center in the South Georgia Medical Center. Register by calling (229) 433-1074.

You must be over 21 but under 65; have not had a pap smear and have not have had a hysterectomy. Click the thumbnail to the left for more information from Dr. Anderson.
