TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- You know her pies are good if they cause you to break into song and sound just like her. Soul diva Patti Labelle debuted a new line of pies that have caused a social media firestorm.
Labelle is no stranger to the kitchen. She's hosted several cooking shows on The Cooking Channel. Most recently, much like Martha Stewart she's tapped into the retail arena, selling her famous sweet potato pies.
Wal-Mart locations all over the country have sold out of the pies, including right here in Tallahassee. One resident says she went into the store on Appalachee Parkway to buy one from a display table but a cashier told her they weren't for sale unless she applied for a Wal-Mart charge card.
Walmart representative John Forrest Ales told Yahoo Food, "For 72 hours, we were selling one per second."They report at $3.48 a pie, that works out to just under $1 million in sales over the weekend. The pie’s product page is currently the most-visited food site on Walmart.com, Ales said. For a bit of context, Walmart might sell two pumpkin pies every second in the month of November.
The Washington Post reports that pies are selling on Ebay and Amazon for nearly $45.
So on Second Cup, Kellie and Max decided to get down to the bottom of the crust to see if #PattiPies were all the buzz.
Thankfully, Brittany Jones, a good friend of WTXL Sunrise, was able to get her hands on a Patti Pie for Kellie and Max to try.
Check out how Patti Pies stacked up to the Mrs. Smith's version of Sweet Potato Pie.
Remember you can watch Second Cup live every weekday morning at 7 a.m. only on wtxl.tv.
