TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Residents of Leon County have always been proud of their trees. With so many majestic oaks and towering magnolias in the area, making sure that every great tree is accounted for is an ambitious task.
That is why a new group is asking residents to measure and photograph their favorite trees through the Leon County Tree Challenge.
The initiative is sponsored by Leon County Government, the City of Tallahassee, Village Square, FSU's Environmental Service Program and the Cornerstone Learning Community. The goal of the program is to create a citizen tree inventory which will be accessible to the public through an online database.
Once enough submissions have been gathered, the database will be accessible through LeonTrees.org. The Leon County Tree Challenge will be accepting submissions through January 19, 2015, but new tree submissions can be added to the database at any time. If you submit your tree before the deadline, you can get a certificate that will date your tree and a timeline of historic events that your tree has lived through.
If you would like to submit a tree, you can enter it in one of 3 categories, species and size, the historic significance of the tree, or trees that are significant to your neighborhood.
You can send in your submission and learn more by going to LeonTrees.org.
