Leon County Sheds Light on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Department of Health - Leon is recognizing National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day with a call to the public, especially with members of the Black community to get tested for HIV.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is Tuesday, February 7.

According to the CDC, Blacks continue to bear the heaviest HIV/AIDS burden of any racial/ethnic group in the nation. The rate of new HIV infections for black men in 2010 nationwide was more than six times as high as the rate among white men and more than twice that of Hispanic men.

724 people in Leon County were living with HIV in 2016, 78% were Black and 1,223 people in Leon County were living with AIDS in 2016, 71% Black.

HIV tests can be schedule through DOH-Leon at any time of the year by calling (850) 606-8000.

All tests are free and confidential.

DOH-Leon also offers free condoms at its Southside location at 872 W. Orange Avenue and at the Roberts & Stevens Clinic at 1515 Old Bainbridge Road.
