Home & Garden: Picking the Perfect Christmas Tree

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- We're getting into the holiday spirit with this Home and Garden!

Dan Provence from Spring Hill Tree Farm joined us on WTXL Sunrise to teach us how to pick the perfect tree this Christmas.

The Christmas Tree Farm at Spring Hill features different types of trees, all with their own merits depending on what you're looking for.

It opened for its 30th season on Thanksgiving.

Provence says his fresh cut Fraser Firs are the "best available from the mountains of North Carolina," and the dark green color and fresh-cut aroma makes them one of the most desirable trees on the market. Prices range based on height, from $60 up to $120.

The choose and cut field trees are $6 per foot for trees to 10 feet tall, and $10 per foot for trees taller than 10 feet. Spring Hill features Virginia Pine, Leyland Cypress and Carolina Sapphire.

Provence says the Virginia Pine is well-known in the South. It has soft, long needles and a good pine smell. He also says they have good needle retention, if handled properly.

Leyland Cypress feature more of a scale-like foliage. When properly cared for the Leyland Cypress Christmas tree will stay fresh much longer than most other tree types and they do not shed needles. They are also hypo-allergenic.

The Christmas Tree Farm at Spring Hill runs weekdays from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Santa Claus is also coming to town on December 5 and 6 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. each day. It's $3 to sit on Santa's lap (there's no charge for Christmas tree customers), or you can get a $5 armband that includes meeting Santa, two bounce houses and hayrides and two crop mazes. A professional photographer will also be on hand for $5.

Spring Hill Tree Farm is located at 795 Woodhull Road in Bainbridge.
