TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- Florida State students are gearing up to head back to class, and school leaders hope they'll use a new app to get around safely.

It's called SeminoleSAFE, and officials say it's a toolbox of resources that anyone headed to the university will want to have with them.

"We're basically arming people with tools to help them remain safe when there's not a cop around," said FSU Police Deputy Chief Jim Russell.

The Florida State University Police Department and Emergency Management are teaming up for the new app to keep students safe and sound this semester.

"The cops can't be everywhere, and the more information you give people about safety... and pushing information out to them if something is going on, the better than they can make decisions for themselves about their safety," said Russell.

SeminoleSAFE alerts students of any campus crimes, plus provides resources in case of emergency. You can even send your location to a friend, so they can track you while you're heading to class or walking back to the dorm.

The app is also loaded with some freshman-friendly features to make sure move-in day is mistake-free.

"Give them directions not just to the building, but to the unloading zone, to the parking areas that we have for them and the shuttle bus routes that we have going in between the two. So hopefully it will make the whole moving process a whole lot smoother and less stressful," said David Bujak, Director of Emergency Management.

And for those who are new to the university, this app will have you navigating like an upperclassman.

"There are parking maps on there, maps where the blue light phones are, where the buildings are...so for incoming people who are just lost, there's great information in there so they can find their way around too," said Russell.

And it wouldn't be fall at Florida State without heading to a football game. SeminoleSAFE has everything you need so you don't miss a second of the action.

"Provide all fans directions to parking lots, information about how to enter the building, what's prohibited and what's allowed, and it will give them the opportunity that if something's quite not going right during the game they can let us know," said Bujak.

The app is free to download, and is available for both iOS and Android devices.
