TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Keeping Leon County beautiful means knowing how to get rid of unwanted electronics and cleaning items safely.
Saturday , lots of people were able to do just that.
The county organized a free hazardous waste drop-off at the public works department.
In just the first two hours, more than 300 cars had cycled through throwing away batteries, TV's, paint, cleaning supplies and more.
Collecting these items keeps chemicals out of landfills and prevents contamination of the water supply.
The waste drop-off helps the environment, but it's also a safety precaution for waste management workers.
"Some cleaning products will actually react violently and can cause fires, something like a pressure tank in a compactor of a garbage truck can rupture and cause an explosion," said Dr. Richard Lobinske, Hazardous Waste Manager.
If you missed Saturday's collection but still have things to throw away, the county organizes one on the first Saturday of every month until May.
