MAYO, Fla. (WTXL) - The Lafayette County Sheriff's Office is again advising people calling them about an IRS phone scam to not give out any information.
"We are unfortunately unable to trace or stop these calls," the sheriff's office said in a Facebook post Tuesday, as the office did on November 22, 2017. "Your best defense is to be informed and not provide any information."
The office suggests that people block the call number if possible and inform their friends or family about the scam, especially if those people are not on social media to learn about it.
Criminals are posing as the IRS to trick victims out of their money or personal information, the post says.
The sheriff says the IRS will not call and demand immediate payment, and will not call if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.
The sheriff's office posted a list of things the IRS will not do:
- Call you to demand immediate payment. The IRS will not call you if you owe taxes without first sending you a bill in the mail.
- Demand that you pay taxes and not allow you to question or appeal the amount you owe.
- Require that you pay your taxes a certain way. For instance, require that you pay with a prepaid debit card.
- Ask for your credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
