TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- In the next edition of the Insiders we are remembering the late Leon County deputy Chris Smith who was killed in the line of duty last year.
Sunday marks one year since he died while responding to a house fire.
Investigators say the suspect lit his own house on fire on November 22, 2014, all to bring first responders there and kill them
When deputy Smith arrived at the home on Caracus Court the man shot him to death.
Deputy Smith is one of the fallen members of the Leon County Sheriff's Office who will be honored at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Detective James Morgan knew deputy Smith well.
They worked nights together for almost two years.
He says he will never forget that dark day he lost his light-hearted friend.
"It doesn't matter what your uniform looks like or what your area is or anything like that," said Det. Morgan. " In Leon County, we have so many different agencies, but everybody felt what our agency felt that day. We had cars riding around with his I.D. 347 on it, civilian cars and other agency cars because everybody was touched by it."
We will hear more from detective Morgan and other law enforcement officers in the Insiders report that airs Sunday at 6:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.
