FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- After 30 years of analyzing tropical weather data and releasing seasonal forecasts of tropical activity for the Atlantic basin, the Tropical Meteorology Project team at Colorado State University is suspending future outlooks in April.
Phil Klotzbach, one of the leaders of the CSU forecasting team, cites a lack of new grant funds and less money from established sources as reasons behind the suspension.
According to a statement released by the Project, "Funding from several insurance companies enabled the continuation of these forecasts in recent years. However, the forecast team has recently lost some of its financial support from industry."
The Tropical Meteorology Project is seeking new sources of funding, sponsorships, and partnerships with the private sector to resume the series of studies and forecasting that first began with Dr. William Gray in 1984.
