TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Driving can be one of the most liberating but dangerous things in the world, and most times, it's out of the driver's control. Natural occurrences such as fog can make visibility seem almost non-existing. But there are a few things that you can do to ensure your safety.
First things first, recognize that there is danger. Fog, especially in the morning hours, can be so dense that it is impossible to see what is ahead.
Once you acknowledge that there is low visibility, begin to put your car's features to use. Most cars are equipped with a defogger but if your car does not, you can help fog dissolve by simply rolling down your window.
Another good way to help out during foggy days, eliminate as many sources of distraction as possible. Lower the radio, turn cellphones off, wait to eat or drink and put away anything else that may take your eyes off the road.
Officials also say its a good idea to drive with your low beam lights on and watch out. High beam lights will only reflect back off the fog and create even lower visibility. And if your vision is temporarily impaired, lower your window so you can hear any cars that are approaching.
Lastly, use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as your guide.
If all if else fails, pull over. Never stop on a freeway or in heavy traffic. If you must pull over, use your signal to alert drivers behind you and pull as far off the road as possible, turning on your hazard lights.
