JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A man who was briefly signed to play in the NFL has been sentenced to 15 years in prison on federal drug dealing charges.
U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III says 40-year-old Donald Broomfield was sentenced in Jacksonville Friday after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Federal prosecutors say Broomfield obtained cocaine in 2010 from Texas and used vehicles with secret compartments to distribute it in Jacksonville and Orlando.
In 2014, a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office drug-sniffing dog helped find 1.6 kilograms of cocaine after Broomfield was pulled over. Investigators later found drug paraphernalia and more cocaine at his home.
Broomfield was drafted in 1999 by the Cincinnati Bengals and participated in the Jacksonville Jaguars training camp in 2001 but never played in the regular season.
