TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The school of allied health science and the FAMU Tobacco Free Task Force are hosting the 2018 students working against Tobacco Leadership Summit.
According to organizers, the summit is an annual, interactive, one day conference for potential youth advocates, where they engage in skill-based activities related to tobacco prevention efforts.
Attendees go through leadership training, they also interact with speakers, learn about the danger of tobacco and marketing tactics.
Organizers say it's all about giving this generation the tools to teach the next generation.
"We're all about empowering our youth they do have a power they do have a voice in order to go and make some standard changes that carry on through generations for years to come," said Crystal Robinsion. "So we definitely want them to know how to educate themselves one and then spread that word to other generations so this is just not the first tobacco free generation."
According to the Florida Department of Health in Leon County, about 6 out of every 10 teens have access to tobacco products and are curious about them.
The summit is in it's 12th year of operation, and the organization is looking to hold more community events like this throughout the rest of the year.
