LOWNDES Co., GA (WTXL) - Deputies say a Lowndes High School student is in custody after bringing a .22 caliber handgun and 2 knives to school on Thursday.
According to the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, a student contacted the school resource officer saying another student had brought the gun to school.
Deputies say the student was taken into custody and the weapons were confiscated.
They are not releasing the name of the student because of their age.
"Actions such as this is the reason we have placed a school resource officer in each school. It is sad we have to take such measures but the safety of our children is of the upmost importance," said Sheriff Chris Pine.
School officials say the gun was not loaded and no ammunition was found.
