TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Ask any parent of a child going into Kindergarten and they'll tell you...it's a big deal.

"I'm excited to see him become a more independent child," expresses mom Elboni Moore. "In daycare, there tends to be some coddling, and in kindergarten, the children have to learn to be more self-sufficient."

Between mom Elboni Moore and her son Caleb, she feels he is more nervous.

"I would say my child is a bit nervous, it's a new environment for him," explains Moore. "We have an older daughter, so we've gone through this experience before, but him on the other hand, it's going to be a big transition for him."

But ask mom Sherri Dirmann and her son Savier, the role is reversed.

"I think probably me," replies Dirmann. "He seems to be doing okay. I'm just a little bit nervous because it's something new, for the most part, excited."

No matter who's most nervous for the first day, both moms say preparation is key.

"We let him pick out his backpack, he was excited about that, and trying to help him meet some of his classmates, talking about school, the different classes he'll get to take," says Dirmann.

Moore answers, "Some safety measures that we've talked about are just being aware of your surrounding and being careful about strangers. We have also been trying to teach him our phone numbers and address, just in case he gets lost."

And while it's bittersweet to see your baby grow up, it's amazing to learn they're ready to do so.

"You can bring me there and drop me off, and in the afternoon the bus could take me home?" Savier asks his mom.

She replies, "That might be an idea. We'll have to consider that."

According to Scholastic.com, cut down on first-morning frenzy by having everything ready ahead of time. They recommend you pack your child's lunch, help him pick out an outfit the night before, and have school supplies laid out so that he can grab them first thing in the morning.
