Defendant in Michigan porch shooting testifies

Posted

DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-area man on trial in the shooting death of an unarmed woman who showed up on his porch last November has testified that he would have liked a home security system but couldn't afford one.

Theodore Wafer took the stand Monday on what is the seventh day of testimony in his trial. If convicted of second-degree murder in the death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride he could face up to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Wafer told jurors he bought the shotgun he used to shoot McBride about six years ago because he thought it was time he "had some kind of security I could afford."

Wafer says he shot McBride in self-defense, but prosecutors say he could have remained behind his locked door and called 911.
