SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A 27-year-old Savannah man is heading to prison for life, with no chance of parole, for the 2013 slayings of a local chef and his girlfriend.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1UZkUwM ) Michael Donnta Jones was sentenced Friday in Chatham County Superior Court, where a jury last month convicted him of malice murder in the killings of Forest Ison and Alice Stevens.
Prosecutors said the couple was gunned down in the carport of their home by Jones and a co-defendant, Nate Wilkins, because Ison had fired Wilkins from his job at a local restaurant. Prosecutor Jerry Rothschild presented evidence showing Jones told seven different witnesses that he was involved.
Wilkins' trial has been delayed as the state Supreme Court considers whether prosecutors can introduce statements by Jones implicating Wilkins.
