Wakulla County Offers Resources for Keeping Bears out of Trash Cans

Tallahassee, Fla., (WTXL)- The Wakulla County Board of Commissioners has accepted grant funding from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Service to reduce the number of conflicts between humans and bears.

$19,679 are being put towards the purchase of  bear resistant trash cans. The bins will cost residents $25 dollars to upgrade.

Unsecured garbage often lures hungry bears into communities, around pets and children, so officials encourage residents who've seen the animals near their property to take advantage of the program.

There are a limited number of cans available so they'll be handed out on a first-come first-served basis starting June 30, 2017. The public works department opens at 8:00 a.m. on distribution day.
