TALLAHASSEE, Fla (WTXL) -- Tallahassee Police honor crossing guards on the last day of school in Leon County.
A ceremony was held at TPD headquarters. The school crossing guard program has been in existence since 1971.
Officials say, the program helps the police department, from having to staff 42 crossings on a daily basis.
Crossing guards are also used for special school related functions and for department staffed events such as the March of Dimes, Heart Walk and Springtime Tallahassee.
