TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- Tallahassee is home to the newest national cemetery. Government officials broke ground Friday at the 250-acre site off of Appalachee Parkway. And addressing the needs of veterans is one sign of improvement in the Department of Veterans' Affairs.
The cemetery's director Raymond Fuller was in attendance ensuring veterans and their families of the quality of the cemetery and how it would benefit the capital city.
The Tallahassee National Cemetery will serve the burial needs of more than 83,000 veterans in 35 counties across the region.
The Secretary of Veterans' Affairs also offered remarks, explaining how the new cemetery is an example of the department's response and improvement.
"We've been able to give more veterans health care than ever before in our system..over 97% of our appointments are within 30 days..30 days or less. 20% are same day. We've brought more and more veterans into the system. 22% of our appointments are in the community that we're working well with the community," said Robert A. McDonald.
