TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- The Holocaust Education Resource Council honored local students Sunday, while marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps during the Holocaust.
The HERC hosts a Holocaust essay and art contest each year to help students honor the memory of both the victims and liberators of the Holocaust.
Students in grades 4 through 12 could participate in the contest. Nearly 200 students submitted essays. One of the organizers told WTXL ABC 27 why a contest like this is necessary.
"I think the reason to learn about the Holocaust is we want to promote multicultural education. Our students to be the leaders of to grow up with an understanding of other cultures and realize more than differences amongst people. We all want peace," said Eileen Lerner, a HERC board member.
The award ceremony was held Sunday at Temple Israel. Cash prizes were up for grabs for contest participants.
