TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Motor vehicles make up as much as half of toxic air pollutants in the world today and as the years go by, it will only get worse as more and more people put cars out onto the road. But the Florida State University's Sustainable Campus & Commuter Services of North Florida is looking to change that.
The organization is hosting an event next week called "Strive Not To Drive," urging people to put down their cars and use their feet or other means of transportation. The event also has an emphasize on recreations, healthy living and sustainability.
Sydney Abril Torres, a Sustainable Campus Graduate Assistant, talked with WTXL Midday's Jade Bulecza about the event and what the organization is asking of students and faculty.
"So we definitely encourage students that are on campus to walk or use their bikes," said Torres. "And students living off campus to use the bus system or even bike if they're close enough."
Students can take the pledge on Sustainable Campus' website and also take part in the "Strive Not To Drive Day" event happening on Tuesday, November 18th.
It will include an educational expo for students and staff to gain more information about transportation alternatives in the Tallahassee area. There will also be a workshop focusing on biking at Florida State.
It's scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and will go on to 4 p.m. at the Oglesby Union Green & Dirac Science Library.
