TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- Hundreds of baseball fans and Leon County residents celebrated the official first day of the newly renovated Miccosukee Community Park Saturday, while honoring a Little League baseball player.
Park goers enjoyed larger, safer playgrounds and improvements on the park's water management systems didn't go unappreciated either.
But the Miccosukee Little League got a chance to play on new and improved baseball fields named after one of their own.
Trent McElroy lost his battle to cancer. ABC27 got a chance to talk with his parents about him being honored on the fields.
"It was in honor of our son Trent who played ball here for many years and was diagnosed with cancer when he was six, battled through.
He loved the sport of baseball and played many games after chemo treatments. And we feel blessed that so many came out to show their
love for our son," said Leigh Anne McElroy.
A statue is also placed at the field in his honor.
