THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) -- Georgia State Patrol reports a fatal car crash on Thursday, May 18 at approximately at 2:30 a.m.

Authorities say Travis Island was killed just south of Eden Plantation on Highway 319.

Investigators believe the 19-year-old fell asleep at the wheel and when the passenger, Ajai Williams, tried to wake him up, Island over-corrected causing the car to spin and hit a tree.

Williams had minor injuries.

Troopers say Island was set to graduate from Thomas High School on Friday, May 19.

Thomasville City Schools sent out this statement in regards to Island's passing:

"The Thomasville City Schools' family is truly devastated by the loss of one of our students. Travis Island , a senior who was scheduled to receive his diploma tomorrow, died in a tragic car wreck early this morning.
