The Big Bend Habitat for Humanity is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is being dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness in Gadsden and Leon Counties.
Habitat selects homeowners based on each family's needs and income. Homeowners help with the construction of their homes by contributing 400 hours of "sweat equity". After moving into their new homes, homeowners make monthly mortgage payments to Habitat. Unlike other lenders, Habitat provides 30 year, 0 interest mortgages.
Currently, Big Bend Habitat for Humanity is working on "The House that the House Built", a new house under construction on Connecticut Street in Tallahassee, Florida. It is being privately funded by members of the Florida House of Representatives, Verizon and others with the support of the City of Tallahassee and Leon County Schools. The dedication of the house will take place on March 23, 2013 for the new homeowner.
