TALLAHASSEE, FL - February is Black History Month.

Wednesday on Sunrise we learned to make African Neck Piece.

Kandis May showed us how.

SUPPLIES:

CARD STOCK PAPER

SCISSORS

GLUE STICK

HOLE PUNCHER

YARN

CONSTRUCTION PAPER (PRE-CUT OUT SHAPES)

AUTHENTIC PICTURE OF AFRICAN NECK PIECE

Directions:

1. Cut out neck piece and make sure all edges are rounded so that the necklace can lay flat on your chest.

2. Punch two holes at the top of the neck piece. These holes will be used to attach the yarn.

3. Cut a piece of yarn and tie the lose ends to the neck piece. Make sure the yarn is long enough to slip over your head.

4. Select pre-cut shapes (or cut out your own shapes) and assemble them in a pattern like form. There is no wrong way to do this use your creativity.

5. Slide the necklace oveR your head and YOUR DONE!

In African neck pieces are worn to express tribal association, age, civil status, marital status, and wealth. Throughout history Africans use organic materials and materials readily available to make beautiful necklaces. Some of the materials used to make the neck pieces are ivory, stone, bones, sea shells, animal teeth, animal hair, wood, amber, and glass.
