Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)--A shotgun tee off sent community members racing for the green today! The Tallahassee Police Department hosted a golf tournament Monday to raise money to send officers to participate in The Police Unity Tour.

This tour not only honors fallen officers but those currently serve and put their lives on the line every day.

Today's tournament started in the air as a helicopter dropped the golf balls on to the green.

The wife of late Leon County Deputy Chris Smith says though her husband wasn't a golf player, he'd be so proud today to see the community remembering the life and legacy of our heroes.

"To continue to honor his legacy and the hero and the dedication that he serves he community its an honor its and honor to see people come out and support", Erika Smith.

The police unity tour begins in May. Officers from all across the nation will pedal 300 miles to Washington DC.

WTXL-ABC27  was there on their trek last year and will bring you coverage throughout the 2016 tour as well.
