Comeback Falls Short as Eagles Top Noles

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – No. 21 Florida State scored four runs in the eighth inning but could not complete a comeback Friday, falling to Boston College 10-7 on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles (17-8, 5-5 ACC) fell behind 7-0 through 3.5 innings, but a sixth-inning bases-loaded walk proved to be the winning run for the Eagles (13-12, 4-6 ACC).

Freshman Robby Martin had four RBI in the contest.

Dan Metzdorf improved to 3-2 for the Eagles, giving up three runs over six innings. Drew Parrish (3-2) allowed five runs in just 1.1 innings in the loss.

Martin hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and a two-run single in the eighth. Mike Salvatore added a two-run double in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 8-7.

The Eagles took an early lead on Gian Martellini’s three-run home run off Parrish in the first inning. It was Martellini’s second home run of the season.

The Noles had a chance to answer in the bottom of the inning against Metzdorf when Salvatore and Reese Albert walked and Drew Mendoza singled with no outs. FSU could not capitalize, however, when Elijah Cabell struck out and J.C. Flowers grounded into a double play.

BC added to its lead with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the second inning to chase Parrish after just 1.1 innings, the shortest start of his career. Austin Pollock came on and allowed two runs on four hits over 1.2 innings.

Freshman Cade Hungate induced a bases-loaded double play and a strikeout to end the fourth inning with the Eagles leading 7-0.

FSU began to chip away at the Eagles’ lead in the fourth. After Cabell and Nander De Sedas singled, Martin hit his team-high 12^th double of the season to score both runners. Jonathan Foster, a second-inning substitute behind the plate, singled to score Martin and cut the lead to 7-3 through four innings.

The Eagles added a run in the sixth against Tyler Ahearn to make the lead 8-3.

FSU put two runners on with one out in the seventh but could not push a run across. In the eighth against reliever Joey Walsh, Cabell and Flowers walked and De Sedas was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Martin scored two on a two-run single before Salvatore closed the margin to 8-7 with a two-run double.

In the ninth, Antonio Velez allowed a pair of runs, the second unearned on a passed ball. Down to its last three outs, Matt Gill gave up back-to-back singles to Cabell and Flowers but retired the next two batters to earn his first save of the year.

• Boston College’s No. 11, Sal Frelick, will wear No. 35 throughout the weekend to honor Florida State head coach Mike Martin, who wears No. 11.
• The Eagles’ senior class presented Martin with a plaque with ‘11’ decals from each of Boston’s four major sports teams.
• Robby Martin entered the weekend ranked 16^th nationally with 11 doubles. His 12 are a team high, five more than Mike Salvatore, who hit his 7^th Friday night.
• Martin had four RBI Friday. His 28 RBI are also a team high, as are his three games with at least four RBI.
• C. Flowers recorded FSU’s first outfield assist of the year in the fifth inning, gunning down the lead runner at third base. He has six outfield assists for his career.
• Elijah Cabell had FSU’s second outfield assist of the year, throwing out Chris Galland at the plate to end the eighth inning.
• Junior Carter Smith entered as a defensive sub at first base, his first time this season playing first base.
