TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida's jobs recruiting agency may soon be laying off nearly a third of its employees and transferring some functions back to state government.
Enterprise Florida was urged Wednesday to eliminate 27 jobs after the Florida Legislature refused to fund a key business incentive program managed by the economic development agency.
Gov. Rick Scott asked a former top aide to review Enterprise Florida after legislators rejected his request for $250 million to lure new companies.
David Wilkins said Enterprise Florida is "top heavy" and doesn't need as many positions since it won't be offering cash incentives to companies. Wilkins also recommended that Visit Florida, the state's tourism development agency, be placed under the Department of Economic Opportunity.
Enterprise Florida is a public-private agency that gets most of its funding from taxpayers.
