LARGO, Fla. (AP) — When a man working along a Florida highway found a loaded gun, he decided to hand it over to firefighters for safekeeping until police could pick it up.
The incident left two firefighters without jobs and a third suspended without pay for a shift.
The Tampa Bay Times reports the man called the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to pick up the gun. When no one showed up, he went to the Largo fire station.
Since then, Lewis Bradford and Michael Ledford resigned and Brad Lonkey was suspended.
The Times reports Bradford put the gun in his car, then told Lonkey he planned to keep it and no one would find out if he kept quiet. Bradford eventually turned it over to authorities.
Largo has a no-tolerance policy on weapons.
