Bainbridge, Ga. (WTXL)--A Bainbridge Public Safety is being hailed a hero tonight after he rescued nine people from an overturned vehicle.
While the community is thanking officer Leroy Akins for his heroism, Akins says he was just at the right place at the right time.
Akins was traveling along US27 when he saw a cloud of dust ahead.
He instantly pulled over and sprang into action.
"I jumped out of the car, ran to the passenger side, the passenger in the front seat was trapped. I looked back behind the passenger seat and there was an elderly woman, she was turned upside down" explains Officer Akins.
A church from Greater Miracle Temple was headed back to Tallahassee when the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
That driver, Bishop Jacob Henderson walked away with only minor scrapes and bruises, thanking God and one brave officer.
"It showed that he cared, he could've went on bout his business. But he was there, caring and we thank god for him", says Henderson.
But if you ask Akins if he feels like a hero, he'll tell you that he was only doing his job.
