ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. (AP) - A woman who was one of the original recipients of CARE packages sent by Americans to battle-torn Europe after World War II is now joining in the campaign to send such packages to Syrian refugees.

Renata Senter says she remembers being a refugee in Germany as a 5-year-old while fleeing Russian enemies and recalls post-war scarcity of bread, paper and pencils.

Senter - who later moved to Florida -also remembers her joy as a 7-year-old when she received a maroon boxed CARE package in school with clean white paper, a doll, chocolate and toothpaste.

Earlier this year, she sent a CARE package and a letter to Duha, a Syrian refugee living with her family in Jordan.

CARE, which stands for Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, was founded in 1945, the product of 22 American charities.
