Woman Charged in Hit-and-Run Death of St. Augustine Teen

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) - Police say a northeast Florida woman has been charged in connection with the 2013 hit-and-run death of a 15-year-old girl.

The Florida Times-Union reports that the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office on Monday said 29-year-old Michelle Higginbotham was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

Police say Haley Smith was walking along a road on the evening of November 2013 when she was fatally struck by a vehicle that didn't stop.

After a newspaper ran a story about the cold case, the sheriff's office received a tip that led detectives to a truck owned by Higginbotham's boyfriend. Paint samples matched fragments from Smith's body.

Higginbotham was easy to find: she was already in the county jail due to a separate, 2015 hit-and-run.
