HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - Both major party presidential candidates have a chance tonight to boost their standing with voters who view them both negatively.

Hillary Clinton has struggled with questions about her trustworthiness, while Donald Trump has yet to prove to some voters that he has the basic qualifications to serve as commander in chief. Both have been continuing intensive debate prep nearly until air time.

Supporters of Clinton are calling on debate moderator Lester Holt to fact-check Donald Trump if he tries to mislead voters at tonight's debate. But Trump's campaign is pushing back, accusing Clinton's team of trying to put its thumb on the scale by enlisting the media to do Clinton's job for her.

Meanwhile, Trump's campaign manager is denying that Trump lied when he claimed that Holt is a Democrat. Holt is actually a registered Republican. But Kellyanne Conway tells MSNBC that in order for it to be a lie, Trump would have to have known that it wasn't true.
