VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) — One of South Georgia's largest cities is celebrating the opening of its first microbrewery.

WALB-TV reports the Georgia Beer Company is scheduled to open to the public Monday in downtown Valdosta. The brewery has been in the works for five years. Co-owner Chris Jones says he and his colleagues feel blessed that they can "make a living brewing beer."

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority hosted an invite-only ribbon cutting at the microbrewery Thursday. Ellen Hill of the business group Valdosta Main Street says the brewery should not only help lure more locals downtown, but should also boost tourism.

Microbreweries are growing in popularity. The Georgia Craft Brewers Guild lists more than 50 breweries statewide.
