JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says a suspect was killed and an officer was injured during an investigation into street-level drug trafficking.
Director Mike Bruno tells The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1CQkkVI ) that the suspect was fatally shot after a series of undercover drug buys Thursday afternoon.
Bruno says the suspect fled from officers as they attempted to make an arrest. He eventually jumped a fence before tripping and falling to the ground.
According to Bruno, an officer feared for his life when the suspect reached for his waistband and fired eight shots, killing him. It wasn't immediately clear whether the suspect had a weapon.
The suspect had been in a car that struck another officer during the chase. Bruno says the officer suffered a serious head injury but is expected to survive.
