SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla -- Transgender students and supporters rallied outside--and briefly inside--the Sarasota County School Board meeting. They're hoping to get the District to grant "trans rights," especially involving access to the restrooms of their choice.
Not everyone is in favor--including parent Amy Foster.
"I don't think it's a great idea. The Lord made a woman and a man," she said.
This issue was sparked locally when high school senior Nate Quinn, who was born a girl but now identifies as a boy, wanted access to the boys restroom at Pine View. The school granted Nate access--but at least one board member was disappointed the decision was made without consulting the board.
"They (the school) were doing what they thought was right at the time, but it's a serious decision and needs to be done at a board level," said school board member Bridget Ziegler
The issue was not--and is not--on the school board agenda. District Spokesman Scott Ferguson, while refusing to speak on-camera, said it will be taken on a "case by case" basis.
But Ziegler thinks a policy is needed.
"We're in a limbo state and so of course people on both sides are pushing the board to make a decision or at least continue a conversation to determine what we do as a district moving forward," she said.
