PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a small plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Florida.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Twitter Friday afternoon that they were responding to a downed Piper PA-32R aircraft 23 miles east of Palm Beach.

Records show the fixed-wing, single engine plane took off from Palm Beach County Park Airport around 1 p.m. The aircraft is registered to Simmons Pet Properties LLC.

Officials didn't immediately say how many people were on the plane or whether anyone was injured.
