FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Crews in Franklin County are still searching for a person they say went missing in the rough surf on St. George Island.

The Franklin County Sheriff has identified the man missing in the waters as 29-year-old Bruce Maynor, Jr. from southern Georgia.

The Franklin County Sheriff says Maynor was pulled into the rough surf after trying to save a child from drowning.

The beach was closed near the lighthouse for a time Sunday as crews searched for Maynor. Officials warn folks to stay out of the rough waters, as dangerous conditions persist.

The search was unsuccessful Sunday and the sheriff says, despite having Coast Guard helicopters and more crews on the beach Monday, the weather conditions made searching difficult. Teams will go back out Tuesday to look for Maynor.

The sheriff tells us, now that more than 24 hours has passed, it's now a body recovery mission, rather than a rescue.
