Puppy Severely Burned Seeking Shelter During Hurricane

OCALA, Fla. (AP) - A six-week old puppy is recovering from severe burns sustained while seeking shelter during Hurricane Hermine.

Veterinarians at the Humane Society of Marion County say a mother dog protected her four pups from the harsh weather under a car. Vets believe the car's hot tail pipe likely burned one of the puppies, saying the third-degree burns cover about 20 percent of the puppy's body. The dog will require two or three months of intensive therapy.

Vets say he has a fiery spirit and a good appetite.

The Ocala Star-Banner (http://tinyurl.com/hd3ykd8 ) reports the owner brought the dogs to the shelter and surrendered custody. The three other puppies are fine and will be adopted when they are old enough.
