VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - Corrections officials in Georgia say they're investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate.
The Georgia Department of Corrections said in news release Thursday that corrections officers found inmate Joel Domingues unresponsive in his cell at Valdosta State Prison around 6:40 p.m. on Feb. 15.
The agency says prison medical staff tried unsuccessfully to revive him and a coroner pronounced him dead around 7:10 p.m.
The agency is investigating, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies in custody.
Domingues was sentenced in 2001 to serve life in prison after he was convicted of murder in DeKalb County.
Corrections officials have previously said that three Georgia inmates died by apparent suicide in January and one other in February, bringing the total to five so far this year.
