SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in Savannah say one person is dead after a vehicle crashed into a fuel pump at a gas station, causing the pump to burst into flames.
Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Sonny Cohrs said the fire erupted at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. He said the preliminary investigation shows a collision on the street caused an SUV to swerve into the gas station parking lot, where the vehicle lost control and struck the fuel pump.
Cohrs said a person found inside the SUV was killed.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which sent up a huge cloud of black smoke.
The fire erupted at the corner of DeRenne Avenue and Bull Street, a busy commercial area lined with stores and restaurants on Savannah's suburban south side.
