ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in southwest Georgia say a police officer shot an assailant after being stabbed while responding to a call about a suspicious person.
Albany police spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said in an emailed statement that the officer and suspect were taken to a local hospital Wednesday morning. She did not say how badly either person was injured.
Banks said the officer was dispatched after someone reported a suspicious person at about 5 a.m. Wednesday. She said the officer was stabbed by a person with an unknown object and the officer then shot the attacker.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate. GBI spokesman Scott Dutton said he did not immediately know the conditions of the officer or suspect.
Albany is located about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
