ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida sheriff's deputy fatally shot a pit bull that attacked a law enforcement officer as the dog's owner was being arrested.

Local news outlets reports Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies were called to a gas station near West Palm Beach on Sunday afternoon to investigate reports of a belligerent man.

When the deputies tried to talk to the man, he tried fighting them. That's when the pit bull started attacking.

Authorities said deputies arrested the man, whose name hasn't been released.

The dog died at the scene. One deputy was taken to the hospital for treatment of numerous bite wounds.
