NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Tampa Bay area parent intentionally hit an elderly volunteer who was directing traffic outside a school.

A Pasco County Sheriff's Office news releases say 34-year-old Lawrence Dean Franklin was arrested and charged Tuesday with aggravated battery with a vehicle on a person over 65 years old.

The release says Franklin was in the parent drop-off loop at Calusa Elementary School Tuesday morning when the 79-year-old man asked him to get into the proper lane. Authorities say Franklin refused to comply and then took his foot off his car's brake. The car struck the volunteer, who sustained a minor leg injury. The release says Franklin later stated he felt threatened by the volunteer.

Jail records say Franklin was being held on $50,000 bail. The records didn't list an attorney.
