ORLANDO, FL. (AP) - Orlando police say a rookie officer has fatally shot a 23-year-old man during an arrest that turned violent.
Police Chief John Mina said authorities were called to an apartment after a fight broke out Friday. Officer Kelvin Vidro tried to arrest Albert Joseph Davis, but police say he took off. Once caught, the chief said Davis continued to fight prompting a very violent struggle. The officer used his Taser at some point before firing his gun once, hitting Davis in the chest.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Orlando Sentinel reports Davis was not armed but did have marijuana and cocaine on him.
Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an independent investigation. Vidro is on administrative leave, which is customary after a shooting.
