MIAMI (AP) - Authorities say nearly 2,000 pounds of cocaine have been seized from a freight ship on the Miami River.

Media outlets report U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Dylan DeFrancisci says officers found the cocaine hidden on the ship while conducting a routine check.

Officials say the ship had arrived empty from Haiti on Tuesday night. Often the ships are filled on the Miami River and then returned to Haiti with goods and other items.

DeFrancisci says hundreds of bricks of cocaine were found stashed in compartments beneath the metal top deck of the ship. He says officers drilled holes in the deck plates and discovered the drugs.

No arrests had been made as of Wednesday evening.
